If Greece and Italy are both part of the Schengen Area, controls at their maritime borders are still very tight, to "fight against illegal immigration". They are accompanied of course by violations of human rights, which Human Rights Watch has documented and published in a report available in English on http://www.hrw.org/reports/2013/01/21/turned-away
