Begenning on August 3, a massive operation to arrest undocumented migrants held in Athens and along the Greek-Turkish border. In total, more than 7,000 foreigners were arrested because they look
like foreigners, and 1,600 detained.
According to testimonies collected by Amnesty International, asylum seekers were arrested and people were detained in inhumane conditions (up to 170 people in a single cell).
The Greek government presents this policy as a necessity because of the crisis, and even immigration as a bigger problem than debt.
Athens neighborhoods, where immigrants are living, are near the city center, and are highly coveted by developers.
